This is a story about Denis Marković, a young talented football player with a problematic temperament, who from an early age, due to his talent, became a target of various interests.

The story covers eighty years in the lives of a pair of Welsh identical twins with an unusual bond, as they go through war, love affairs, and land disputes.

In one city lived the Black Robber, the Pink King, the Blue Lady, the Green Bear and the Golden Boy. The first four heroes think that the boy is literally golden, and dream of getting him in order to fulfill their dreams.

The saga of Alias Jimmy Valentine began with the O. Henry story "A Retrieved Reformation". This surprise-ending tale was adapted into a stage play by Paul Armstrong, which subsequently was adapted to film several times
